Brushed DC motors are one of the most common motor types, widely used in automotive, power Tools,Pumps, garden tools ,particularly in low-power, high-starting-torque applications. Selecting the right motor has a significant impact on the performance and cost of your equipment. Considering factors such as speed, torque,Size, duty, cycle, load, compatibility,Voice, temperature, and maintenance requirements can help you make an informed choice. With so many options available, here’s what to look at before making your decision.
Start by confirming your voltage requirements — DC motors typically operate between 2V and 36V depending on the power needed. For speed, the rated (loaded) speed matters more than the no-load speed, as it reflects real-world performance under load. Torque — the amount of resistance the output shaft can overcome — is directly tied to speed. Knowing both the rated torque and stall torque (peak torque) will help you select the right standard motor or gear motor for efficient operation.

Once you have determined the required voltage, speed, and torque parameters, the next step is to consider the physical size of the motor as it will be installed in your product. Generally, larger motors deliver more power and torque — typical miniature brushed DC motors range from 28–52 mm in diameter and 38–85 mm in length. If space is limited, you may need to trade off between size, power, and torque, and adjust your requirements or budget accordingly.
The duty cycle — including running time, downtime, and direction of rotation — determines which motor type best suits your application. For most industrial uses, an intermittent duty cycle is recommended to extend motor and gear reducer life. Continuous operation is also possible, you need to ensure that the motor is always running at peak efficiency.
Finally, you need to determine the built-in accessories for your motor, which are typically selected based on your product's characteristics, application, and requirements.
For example, if your product is a power drill, electric screwdriver, or any other application with high torque demands, you should pay close attention to heat management — a built-in cooling fan is usually recommended to improve heat dissipation. If your product is a fan, water pump, or adult products where low noise and long service life are priorities, we recommend using ball bearings instead of standard sleeve bearings. If your product is intended for export, it will need to pass EMC testing, which requires adding components such as capacitors, inductors, and varistors inside the motor to suppress electromagnetic interference.
To get the most out of a brushed DC motor, keep these four areas in mind:
